The nurse externship program is an eight week, 192 hour, clinical working experience designed for incoming senior nursing students who have completed Level III at UNMC or have senior status at Clarkson College. These students will receive 3.0 hours of college credit and be classified as casual labor (temporary), non-licensed members of the nursing staff. The nurse externs will be supervised by a faculty member from their respective college and be assigned a registered nurse preceptor for the entire program.

Program dates:
8-week program: June 7 – July 30

The nurse externship program will provide a comprehensive clinical experience for incoming senior level nursing students that results in college credit, an opportunity to be exposed to the practices of nursing in a real-world environment, and enhanced recruitment into nursing positions post-graduation.

  • Nurse externs will be employed on a casual (temporary) status (no benefits) and will work two 12 hour day shifts for eight weeks.
  • The nurse extern will be supervised by a faculty member from their respective college.
  • The nurse extern will be assigned an RN preceptor for the entire program.
  • The RN preceptor will be responsible for the assignment and evaluation of the nurse extern in collaboration with the faculty member.
  • Each nurse extern will be responsible for evaluation of the preceptor and the nurse externship program.
  • Students with satisfactory performance will have an opportunity to remain on staff as a patient care tech or clerk tech during the school year if positions are available.
  • A maximum of eight, and a minimum of four, students from each college will be accepted into the program.
  • Externs must be entering senior level in their nursing program and must have completed at least Level III at UNMC or have senior status at Clarkson College.
  • Willing to commit to two 12-hour day shifts per week for eight weeks for a total of 192 clinical hours.
  • Must have current BLS certification.
  • Must have a GPA of at least 3.0.
  • Must complete an application with two recommendations from previous faculty.
  • Must interview with designated individuals.

Participate in progressive clinical experiences with ability to accept a patient assignment and perform skills commensurate with level of preparation. These include such skills as physical assessment, IV insertion, catheter insertion and management, medication administration, wound care, care planning and documentation of appropriate information.

PAY
  1. Minimum starting salary is $11.50/hour.
  2. Tuition payment.
    • Payment for 3.0 hours college credit. Candidate will pay for course up front and will be reimbursed tuition cost upon successful completion of program.
    • Current UNMC College of Nursing tuition.
    • Current Clarkson College tuition *.
      *Current employees of The Nebraska Medical Center enrolled at Clarkson College will be paid at the discounted tuition rate if eligible.

The following areas at the Nebraska Medical Center will be available as clinical sites for the nurse externship program.

Two 12-hour day shifts per week on Wednesday & Thursday for eight weeks for a total of 192 hours.

The nurse extern, faculty member, and preceptor will be expected to complete evaluations at the end of the assignment.

At the end of the nurse externship assignment, the nurse extern may apply to transfer into another position in the same unit or a different unit depending on availability and schedules.
